Minato Palace

Minato Goten is the villa of the Kishu feudal lord located in what is now Minato Goten 1-chome, Wakayama City, and was built during the era of the second feudal lord, Mitssusada Tokugawa. After that, it was used by successive feudal lords, and was destroyed by fire several times during that time, but in 1832, the 11th feudal lord, Seijun Tokugawa, began construction of a new palace, which was completed in 1834. It is said that the newly built palace at this time was a spacious and luxurious structure modeled after the Honmaru Palace of Edo Castle and the Kishu clan's Edo mansion.
During the Meiji period, many of the buildings that made up the palace were demolished, but some were relocated to temples and other places. This Minato Palace is one of these buildings and has been designated as a designated cultural property by Wakayama City. The building is built in the shoin-zukuri style, with the pillars made of high-quality togamasa wood, the ceiling covered with torinoko paper, and the cedar door of the tatami room decorated with colored paintings by an artist who served the Kishu clan.
