Kishu Toshogu Shrine

Kishu Toshogu Shrine, towering over the land of Kishu, is known as a famous temple located in Wakanoura. It was built in 1621 by Yorinobu, the tenth son of the Tokugawa family and the first lord of the Kishu domain. It was built to enshrine the spirit of his father, Ieyasu, and to pray for the peace of the country and the safety of the people. The carvings on the main shrine building were created by the master craftsman Hidari Jingoro, and the paintings of both the Kano and Tosa schools are exquisite masterpieces. The richly colored architecture conveys the beauty of the Momoyama period. It has been recognized for its value as a building from the early Edo period, and has been designated as a national important cultural property. It is a famous place that continues to attract people's faith as a symbol of Wakanoura.
